In 1989, 🇨🇳China was the most populous country in the world, with a total of 1,134,414,723 people. Followed by 🇮🇳India, with the second largest population globally of 852,012,673 people in total. The country with the lowest population count for the year was 🇻🇦Holy See with only 705 people.

The geographic region with the largest population in 1989 was Asia with a total population of 3,150,480,219 people, closely followed by Africa with a population of 621,167,635, and Latin America and the Caribbean with a population of 434,345,556 people recorded for the year.
