In 1997, 🇨🇳China was the most populous country in the world, with a total of 1,237,801,448 people. Followed by 🇮🇳India, with the second largest population globally of 1,002,335,230 people in total. The country with the lowest population count for the year was 🇻🇦Holy See with only 667 people.

The geographic region with the largest population in 1997 was Asia with a total population of 3,586,095,561 people, closely followed by Africa with a population of 761,224,444, and Latin America and the Caribbean with a population of 499,347,530 people recorded for the year.
